Self-care is a way to build your physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. Exercise; going to the gym, walking, biking, running hiking, martial arts are all good ways to improve your physical health.
Mental health has an impact on our physical health, as well. Doing things you love, practicing gratitude, creating novel experiences can help you fight physical illnesses. It can prevent workplace burnout, relationship strains, and promote self-esteem, as well.
“It’s not selfish to love yourself, take care of yourself, and to make your happiness a priority. It’s necessary.” — Mandy Hale
Here at the Green Man Farmhouse, we believe in self-care. The owners paint, draw, do photography, write, exercise, and spend time with our pups. We spend time outside reading, looking at the wildlife that inhabit our small copse of trees, and drinking coffee.
What do you do for self-care?

Owners Helen and Michael moved to Indianapolis for work in 2024. Michael was a social worker in New York. Helen was born in England, and we look to retire in the UK. We both share a love for history, reading, art, and current affairs. Michael dabbles in photography, while Helen paints with ink.

Our wonderful students and neighbors are back in session. I can already hear the games over the loudspeaker from our deck. Fall is around the corner. It’s a great time of year to be present in the Butler-Tarkington Neighborhood.
It was nice having a quiet couple of months, but we do miss the activity and events that Butler brings to the neighborhood. We are two blocks from great basketball, football, concerts, and nightlife.
Enjoy the weather from our roofdeck or front porch, drinking wine and listening to the game announcers 🙂

Harry the Hawk was back again this week. Harry brings Big Hawk Energy to the yard and is a regular, keeping a beady eye on the chipmunks. Sydney the Squirrel is permanently on the feeder getting visibly fatter by the day and stealing all the bird seed. Rodney the resident Raccoon has been jumping on the garden furniture again and washing his paws in Michael’s mug. The mug now belongs only to Rodney! Bird Bath and Beyond is continuing to keep everyone cool.

10/10 Excellent. “This place was by far the absolute best spot we have *ever* gotten in the Indy area. It is in such a nice location, easy to find, and is also so cozy. The owners provided so many options for food and other points of interest, as well as some really cool history about the property and family. We will 110% stay again. 10/10 would recommend!!!”
10/10 Excellent. “My husband and I stayed for Butler Graduation weekend. It was clean, well-appointed and amazingly convenient for all Butler events. Perfect for us”
10/10 Excellent. “We enjoyed our stay at this charming house. It was clean, quaint and perfect location for our night near Butler University. Other than a minor check-in delay our stay was perfect!”
10/10 Excellent. “Clean, quite, beautiful community.”
We are so grateful for these reviews. This farmhouse is our pride and joy.
This is a WWII British propaganda poster encouraging people to Boil Milk. Why? I’m not quite sure, but we love it. It’s currently on display in our home.

Our family has a proud history of military service that spans at least five generations. My great-grandfather, Major General Paul R. Hawley, was the Surgeon General of the European Theater of Operations. My grandfather, also served in Europe, was awarded 2 Bronze Stars (one for valor), my father served in the Coast Guard, I served in Iraq, in the army, and now the next generation has joined the Marines.
We hang the pictures, awards, and medals on our dining room wall in honor of the men (and their families) who served in our family. I will post stories and news articles moving forward.

Helen and I own this quaint farmhouse in Butler-Tarkington. It was built in 1912 and expanded in the mid-90s by its loving owner. Helen was born and raised in London and the West Country of England. Michael was born in New England and misses it, dearly.
I am an Army combat Veteran who served 16 months in Iraq as an infantryman. I have worked in the mental health field with people suffering from PTSD for over 8 years. I enjoy photography and writing.
We bought this house because it’s beautiful and peaceful. We love the home, and want you to feel the same way about it. We both decorated it with art and antiques. We keep the slightly creepy antique rocking chair and crib out of sight.
Michael and Helen share an interest in history, archaeology, and art, and we collect both art and antiques, including rare books and prints.
We live next door and are available to chat or help with any issues.
